Background

Just curious kyle, what sort of background do you have in baseball? Were you a player in anything but men's league? I see you are a student of the game, but aren't we all! Did you play in college or Pro? You and i would disagree on many of the topics you give help on mechanically. I played in college, but didn't make it pro, so i feel like i have a pretty good background.

Experience

I played up through high school, but not in college until I joined a JuCo summer league while attending undergraduate school. I currently just play in men’s leagues and coach a variety of players (from HS to minor league ball). Never had any real drive about baseball until about five years ago, actually – before then it was just a hobby.

Regardless, I think we both know that many ex-players (even at high levels) don’t make the best coaches, and a lack of playing experience doesn’t mean the coach/analyst is a bad one. Much of what I post online regarding injury analysis does apply to what I teach my students, but each student is different and requires different cues. Many cues I use are very popular and probably crossover to what you teach as well!

I have a lot of experience studying biomechanics as a serious amateur; I have read over 25 published papers and summarized most for myself. I am nearly an expert with commercial-grade high speed video that I have used to analyze exercise physiology. In the end, I think my experience studying human anatomy and fitness has helped me far more than simple baseball experience, though I am a student of the game and love to be around it as much as possible.

Background

Just because one doesn’t/hasn’t played the sport doesn’t mean they can’t be an expert. Personally, I credit both Kyle and Chris O’Leary’s research for my recent and new pitching mechanics. I currently play college ball and what I have learned in the last 6 months is more than I had known my whole life. I was able to play college on just talent and not performing the “correct,” injury prevention motion. What really motovated me to change was shoulder soreness I was beginning to have at the end of last spring due to poor timing. I was proud of myself for diagnosing my injury problem and working towards a more pendilum swing. So, thank you Kyle. You have been a great help to me!

You are welcome, but...

…don’t sell yourself short. All that analysts like myself and Chris O’Leary are doing are pointing out what we believe to be flaws backed up by research and experience. Fixing them is another matter entirely and requires the dedication and hard work to become reality. You are the one that made it happen. Congratulations!
