Analysis Request: Carl Pavano
Appreciate the great work you do on this site. If you have already done this, please disregard, but would be interested to see a breakdown on Pavano.
Given that Cleveland has just about guaranteed him a spot in the rotation, it would be interesting to see an analysis comparing him pre and post elbow reconstruction... (albeit limited sample from 2008 post surgery)
From Anthony Castovince (mlb.com):
Pavano is guaranteed $1.5 million for '09, with the chance to make another $5.3 million in performance-based incentives. About to jump on a conference call with Mark Shapiro. Look for the full story on Indians.com in a little bit...
Shapiro says Pavano is guaranteed a spot in the rotation, if he's healthy. The incentives don't kick in until Pavano makes at least 18 starts.

Typical Shapiro signing
I saw this. I have video of Pavano on my machine at home, so I’ll try to splice something together. I actually didn’t see many bad things the first time through, but I’ll take a look again.

What a joke
Pavano’s problems are more related to poor conditioning then anything mechanical. Sad sad signing by the Indians but typical. This is the reason they are going to be perennial losers for the next decade.

Not sure I get it
$1.5M is a lot of money to us, but chump change compared to contracts given to others. I don’t know what the incentives are, but if Pavano even gives them 0.5 wins above replacement (like a mid-range #5 starter), this is a good deal for the Indians.
Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

I disagree.
Yes, Pavano’s injuries are probably due to his conditioning (or lack thereof), but these types of deals are low-risk and possibly high-reward. I see nothing wrong with.
