Mechanics Request: Brad Kilby
While watching last night's A's/Rangers game, I watched in amazement at the bizarritude of Brad Kilby's mechanics. I'm at work, so I don't have any motion picture evidence to offer up right now.
Suffice to say that my reaction to his pitching motion vacillated between, "surely that's a joke" and "surely that's a product of blunt force trauma to the brain." But I am no expert, so I thought I would ask for the advice of the experts.

The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

My favorite thing about Kilby
I saw him pitch for the Rivercats in May. Check out how he puffs out his cheeks:

Reminds me a little
of CC Sabathia, with the way he holds the ball behind his back leg.

He’s a little more pronounced than CC. Kilby almost moves the ball behind his back while CC, like you said, keeps the ball behind his leg.

His stuff looks terrible
He throws high 89 MPH fastballs and a pretty flat slider. However, he’s struck out nearly 11 per 9 in AAA this year. He must have a TON of deception with that windup.

Hitters see the ball very late
Fastball looked 98 based on how late all the hitters were.

When I saw him pitch against Omaha in May
He was LIGHTS OUT. I don’t know enough about mechanics to have much insight on whether his approach has staying power, but it was certainly working, and he appears to have continued in that trend at the major league level.

In the Mariners/A’s broadcast last night, M’s commentator Mike Blowers talked about Kilby’s delivery, noting that while it looks very odd at first as he wraps his hand behind his hips, he then seems to come to the plate just fine, that he got his arm up and in the cocked position in time for his turn toward the plate.
Maybe I was reading too much into it, but it sure seemed like Blowers was familiar with the concepts that Kyle talks about here and was in agreement, i.e. he felt like Kilby didn’t have a timing problem.
Clearly that hand wrap must add some deception to his delivery, because his stuff is quite ordinary yet he generates a good number of swinging strikes and strikeouts.
